Times Two Sideways Reversible Scarf
HeartStrings knitting pattern #A178
Imagine this reversible scarf in the softest of yarns caressing your neck. The understated elegance of subtly textured horizontal bands makes this a handsome man's scarf as well as women's.
Sample model knitted in Jade Sapphire Angelwing 100% Handspun Cashmere, color #29 Slate
The "times two" reversible technique intermixes hand spun or hand dyed yarn, or even mixed dye lots, to get uniform thickness and color. The sequence of two rows is begun on alternating ends of the row in such a way that the yarn carried up the ends of the rows is distributed equally. This avoids the double bulky edge at just one end that results in the usual method of alternating yarns every other row.
The scarf is knitted side to side in rows equivalent to the length of the scarf. Matching cast on and bind off instructions are included.
Size: 7" by 85" lightly blocked
Yarn: 2 skeins Jade Sapphire Angelwing 100% Handspun Cashmere, 50g/approx 200 yards per skein OR your choice of 400 yards comparable light fingering weight
Suggested needles: 36" – 40" length circular needle, size US 5 (3.75 mm) suggested; although the scarf will be knitted flat, the circular will be used as a 2-ended needle to efficiently slide work from one end to the other when changing from one ball to the other
Gauge: 14 stitches and 35½ rows = 4" lightly blocked; the pattern stitch in a non-reslient fiber like cashmere has a lot of lateral give compared to its row gauge
Other notions:
size H (5mm) crochet hook (used for cast on)
tapestry needle for finishing ends
Construction: beginning cast on is 296 stitches; worked flat in rows from side to side in one piece no sewing or grafting
Stitches used: knit, purl, k2tog, k3tog, p2tog, p3tog, slip, yarn over
Stitch instructions: charted and written
Special technique: alternating 2 skeins of hand-dyed, hand spun yarn every other row in a way that avoids both yarn strands being carried up the same edge
Skill level: intermediate
