Cascading Hearts Faroese Shawl

HeartStrings knitting pattern #A2

Cascading Hearts Faroese Shawl pattern features stockinette stitch knitted lace of interlocking heart motifs. The distinctive "butterfly" shaping of the Faroese shawl makes an exceptionally wearable garment because of the shaped shoulders and elongated ends for optionally tying around the waist.

As in all other Faroese shawls in the HeartStrings collection, Cascading Hearts Faroese Shawl is worked from the neckband down and features shaped shoulders to make the wearing of this shawl stay put without extra pins and clasps. You start with just a few stitches so that you can become familiar with your yarn and the stitch patterns.

There's an inventive increase technique used in this pattern to simulate the decreases in the traditional bottom-up Faroese shawl center back panel, side panels, front bands. Easy enough for beginners, and might even be something that more advanced knitters have not used before for something like this (detailed instructions included).

28" - 31" long and 44" - 48" across at widest point as worn. 1075 yards lace weight or fingering/jumper weight yarn as preferred, 4 stitches/inch (laceweight) or 3¾ stitches/inch (fingering/jumper weight), size US 8 / 5.0 mm needles suggested. Adjusts smaller or larger with change in yarn and corresponding change in needle size and yardage. Shown in MacAusland Shetland jumper weight yarn (equivalent to fingering weight yarn). Charted instructions.

Carol A. writes —
"I just wanted to let you know how much I'm enjoying the Cascading Hearts pattern...There were a couple of stitch variations I wasn't familiar with, and your directions were super."
